#48: Spatial web and disconnecting from our communities

Plus Wiki history game, Baseball ASMR, Game Boy Camera and more.

💎 Word gems

Spatial Web Browsing (Maggie Appleton)

One broader trend in web3 is arguably spatial. This piece argues before we even get to AR/VR we should look at improving spatial movement in web browsers. The idea of an infinite canvas feels very close to simply what we can do with windowing today, but it does ground the idea of spatial web away from metaverses into an idea we could better explore today.

Ironically, there are whole engineering teams focused on making the web "spatial" by sticking web browsers on 3D walls within AR/VR environments. That feels like putting the cart before the poorly rendered, nausea-inducing horse given we haven't even built tools to properly browse the web in 2D space yet.

Is the ‘Future of Food’ the Future We Want? (Eater / Jaya Saxena)

Disconnecting from your local community is another broader trend I’ve seen amongst the VR/metaverse/web3 word vomit, and it’s worrying. Eater explores this from the angle of food delivery to everyone, everywhere, and it’s a fascinating one.

Is the American dream never having to go outside? I thought of this in the long walk through the Bellagio back to my hotel room, which distorted my sense of just where the hell I was; signs led the way to corridors and trams to other hotels, with other restaurants, bars, and casinos I could enjoy without ever having to step onto a street.

💩 Cool shit

Wiki History Game - Along with Wordle, I’ve been obsessed with this game. Place events from history on a timeline in chronological order. It gets very hard, very quickly.

Game Boy Camera Gallery - Remember the Game Boy Camera? Explore a virtual gallery filled with photos taken on it.

Sleep Baseball - I don’t follow baseball but I love this. Tune into a full-length fake baseball game. It’s like Welcome to Night Vale meets sleep soundscapes.

GriftCoin - Speaks for itself, really.

Food timeline - A timeline of human development of food.

Frank Force Generative Art - A fun OS-like portfolio website design.

Animated Drawings - This is really cool. Upload a drawing and watch it become animated!
